Out of the Box iPhone4 Notes

June 29th, 2010 by Matthew Carpenter

I wanted to throw out my initial impressions on the iPhone 4 after the first few days of use. This is of particular importance I think to those 3G and 3GSers who have not moved yet.

  • The design is very sleek and more techy in my opinion. I loved the sexy curves of the previous versions, but this seems very sturdy and stiff. The upgraded buttons to metal is a big plus. I love that. The “thinness” factor is not a big deal. They are trying to make it one, but I set it next to my 3G and it is negligible.
  • The weight is very noticeable. It kind of adds to the stiff and sturdy factor, but this guy is noticeably heavier
  • Hallelujah, the battery is real! I have not gone to “red” once this week. I do not charge it nearly as often, and I leave my phone on full brightness. Amazing win.
  • This thing is wicked fast. I can not believe how much faster this is. I got to where I was used to the drag when typing or doing other things. Now it is like I have a true laptop processor in my hand. 3G is what it is, but on WIFI, it is insanely fast. All non-network tasks are wicked too.
  • Multitasking is overrated. It is very nice I must say to do Pandora, text, email, or whatever, but it is not true multitasking, which I think is good. It will run down resources to have too much open. You now have to purposely stop some apps. For example, if I am listening to Pandora, multitask to email, and then to text, but need to stop the music for some reason, I have to purposely go back and do that. Sometimes we forget that the value in NOT multitasking is that I can just hit “home” and it is done. This will take getting used to
  • Grouping and unimailboxes are cool. I like grouped texts and I like uni-mailbox, however it looks like you can not change the sender email. I may need to look into this but is appears that the default mailbox is always the sender when you reply to email. Hmmmm
  • Tweetdeck is back on top. I was really tired of Tweetdeck before. It ran so slow and photos hardly ever worked. With the faster phone, it seems most issues are resolved and it is back as my Twitter client!
  • The camera is SICK! The new video and higher end camera is amazing. I am not saying it will replace my camera for print quality work, but this is truly a HUGE upgrade. It is magic, and the flash is so awesome!
  • The screen is unbelievable. I mean that literally. I can not believe the quality of picture and vision it has. the resolution is truly an iPad small form. So the iPad was a huge iPhone? The new iPhone is a small iPad. And anyone that knows design knows that when you go from big to small, the results are epic.
